Artist Biography
I was fond of painting from childhood. I joined Kalabhavan ( College of Fine Arts ) at Tagore's university at Santiniketan in 1951 shifted to the graduate school due to family compulsions. For six years at Santiniketan, first as a student and then as a teacher, I was closely associated with College of Fine Arts and created many paintings and sculptures.
I however entered a long academic career in social science and served at different universities. I retired as a Professor of Sociology from the Central University , Hyderabad in 1994.
Towards the end of my career (1992) I began playing with digital compositions on PC. I started this seriously from 1996. For someone who had close encounter with fine art at a young age, coming back to painting on full time basis was an enjoyable homecoming.
Artist Statement
I started with line based figurative, representational and nature works, reminiscent of Bengal school, but now I have settled with abstract compositions. I begin my original freehand compositions in ‘Painter' and rework these in ‘Photopaint'. The final result is sometimes different from the one that I start with, enriched with layers, effects and textures. I work in 2D format only and I do not start with photographs or scanned images. My work is different from the mainstream graphic/cinematic or 3D "digital art" works. To me spirit (ideas and feelings) is more important than technical marvel of superbly executed forms.
