Artist Biography
While taking drawing lessons at the age of nine, it became evident to Gil that he wanted to spend his life creating art. He began working in oil at age 12 and at age 14 he left a Jesuit boarding school and entered into an art restoration workshop. There, he spent the next 4 years learning the techniques of the Old Masters. This stunning environment has had an enormous, impactful and lasting influence in the development of his technical skills as an artist.
As an artist, Bruvel is unique in that his work straddles two art worlds divided by five centuries in time: the 15 th -century world of Renaissance painting tradition, and the 21 st -century, silicon- based world of digital visualization, said Holle Humpries, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the department of art and art history at the University of Texas at Austin. He learned to integrate (the computer's) capabilities to help him achieve his goals as an artist; more importantly, he sublimated the capabilities of the machine (the computer in conjunction with a ZCorp 310 printer) to meet his demands to maintain his style and his aesthetic as an artist. It's extraordinary, impressive.
Born in Australia and raised in France , in 1991 Gil set up residence in Hawaii with a three year hiatus to work on a private commission project in Houston , Texas. He currently holds residence in Hawaii and Texas.
Artist Statement
I originally practiced with stone sculpture as a child then became a painter for 30 years. It is only in the last eight years that I have come back to sculpture. My approach at this time has been with the use of various rapid prototyping machines in conjunction with 3D modeling in programs like Maya, Zbrush and Magic RP from Materialise for the manipulation of STL files. I have my own 310 printer from ZCorp which I now use to do my sculptures. In addition, I have also used stereo lithography machines as well as CNC machine to do parts.
I continue to paint and experiment with new creative processes. I am a strong believer in new technologies as a mean of artistic expressions, introducing a new paradigm in the creative process that never existed before.
